I’m working on a new banner with Peter from Logos for websites. What do you think about this one?

I got some feedback that the image is too generic, but I can’t find any nicer pictures at the moment. I’ll keep this in mind and continue to look for something more unique. Meanwhile, I’m going to stick with this picture that I took when we visited Krabi, Thailand for now. I looked on Flickr and it seems all the beach sunset pictures are very similar. There are a few really great pictures, but they are not creative common so I can’t use them.

The other option is to get rid of the sunset. What kind of picture should I use? I love the beach and really want to use it. Maybe I should try white sand beach and turquoise water instead? With palm trees?

I’m going to try some new themes this weekend as well. So you may see some different things here and there. The current theme is Twenty Ten, a generic free theme from WordPress. I like the simplicity, but it’s probably time to find a more eye catching theme. I found out the Twenty Ten theme has a sunset picture that is similar to the banner so that’s one reason why some people think they have seen it before.

A few more banner options.

banner 2

1st draft

banner 2

2nd option – transparent

banner 3

3rd options. smaller fonts

I do like the one you’ve selected compared to the others. The color of ’40’ sort of blends with the background, maybe make it slightly stronger?

I tried a highlight and it doesn’t work. Maybe we can try a bit different color

I like the third one you put up. It catches your eye quicker. It also looks more professional–I say go with that one!

I agree that the one you’ve selected is probably the best. But I think the retire and by sort of blur together so it looks like “retireby” not “retire by” to me. Maybe an extra space or put retire in the same color as 40?

Thank you for the mention. Not sure if my opinion counts but I like the 3rd option.

I love the picture don’t change it. I thought I read (on a forum)that you took the picture. You should keep it. I like the banner one you chose too. You know, I like the way the way the other banners have “retire” and “40” in green and “by” in orange. Maybe if you tried that with the font you chose for the banner you like so far.

Good luck changing things around this weekend.

    Thank you for the mention.

Thanks! Yes, I took that picture in Krabi, Thailand. I think I’ll have to bring my good camera the next time we take a beach vacation. Usually we just take the little compact camera.

Great job improving your blog’s look! I love to see constant improvement. πŸ™‚

I liked the last one the best!! I love water… anything with a water theme is okay by me πŸ™‚

Looks like you are changing it as I write this πŸ™‚ When I came to the home page there was a header, now after I clicked on this post, it disappeared. I like the one you chose the best… sunset and water goes great with your retire by 40 theme. The change from 2020 might make it much more unique…

Thank you again for the mention. I know how challenging it can be updating your theme. I feel ya. I do like the second option. I think it’s important for the blog name to take up a lot of the space in a custom banner. It will look better when you need to create smaller banners, buttons, and ads later. I also like the contrast in color, with the ‘BY’ in orange. Looks sharp. The 1st option jst looks a little too busy in comparison. Just my thoughts, but I’m sure I’ll like whatever you finally decide on.

It all comes down to what you want to achieve by the header graphic. If you’re selling retirement by 40 then it’s likely that your ideal audience is younger than 40.

With that in mind, what is the one thing your ideal audience wants to DO when they retire? Travel the world? Buy a hot car? Sit around playing WoW?

I’d consider polling your email subscribers and readers, asking what they would do if they found themselves retired at 40 years old. That’s the starting point for the ideal image or logo.

Personally, I’d go with a logo rather than a photo. But then again, I’m 41. πŸ™‚

That’s cool – reminders me, I gotta do some redesign on my site. It’s completely lame still. Nice work on yours!

I like the logo as you have it now. One comment – I’m not sure I like that I have to scroll back *up* to the top of a post to click “comment” but other than that, everything looks great!

Thanks for the feedback! I went through a bunch of themes over the weekend and didn’t really find anything I love. I’ll have to keep working on it every Sunday.

Thanks for mentioning the mention! I wonder if it’s time for me to start the redesign, too…
