Spring 2011 Resolutions Update

lowering plum

Can you believe it’s April already? The first quarter of 2011 just flew by and now it’s Spring and it’s time for me to check my progress on the 2011 New Year’s resolutions.

First off though, I want to let you know that I fixed the microwave in the rental condo! Yeah! That was the first thing I did to kick off my 3 months early retirement preview. The microwave in the unit stopped working and I searched the internet for diagnostic instructions. I found a great microwave repair page and it listed my symptom – timer and light work, but the turntable does not spin and no heat. This means part of the microwave is not getting power and there is probably a bad door switch. I ordered a switch and replaced the bad part with a new one, but when I tried to heat, the circuit breaker popped. This symptom is also listed and I just needed to make sure the door and switches were aligned correctly. Once I fixed that, the microwave worked. Whew, I saved quite a few bucks there. Apparently, about 75% of microwave problems are due to bad door switches, that’s good to know.

Here are the 2011 resolutions and update:

Financial Goal – acquire a rental 4-plex. I got my finances together and pre-qualified for a mortgage loan with a local bank. Since then, I have been working with a real estate agent to find a 4 plex. We found a short sale about a month ago and made an offer to the bank. Now we are just waiting for the bank to do their job and get back to us. Meanwhile, we are still keeping our options open and continue to look at other properties. Grade: A

Transfer to a new position – I’m taking 3 months off so this is on hold until Q3/Q4. I checked with my contacts and there are quite a few positions open so we’ll see how it goes. Grade: Incomplete

Stay Alive in 2011 – Hey, this blog is still getting new posts right? 😀 I have been going to the gym at work 4-5 times per week, but that’s going to be tough during my bonding leave. I don’t have another gym membership so we’ll probably just take a lot of walks and do a few things at home. I’ll keep doing yoga and will try doing push ups and squats a few times a week. I have been eating mostly home cooked meals, but these could be healthier. I’ll work on that during the break. Maybe I can try the slow carb diet. I also went for my annual check up and things look mostly OK. Don’t forget to get your annual check up people, catch any problems early and your chances are much better. Grade: B+

No New Electronics – This was as difficult as I imagined it to be. Here are the list of electronics that insinuated themselves into our home. Exceptions – replacement or baby items are OK.

  • new cable modem – switched to Comcast and replaced the wi-max modem.
  • bathroom scale – got it so we can weight Baby RB40, runs on a battery.
  • baby swing – a plug-in swing. He doesn’t stay in there long, but any little time we have our hands free is worth it.
  • replacement cordless phone and cordless screw driver.

These are all within our exceptions, but that is still quite a few electronic stuff. Grade: B

Blog Goals – I was able to keep up 3 posts per week through the first few weeks of Baby RB40’s birth, but it was really tough though and I think I should give myself some leeway in the future. I have been participating in blog carnival about twice a month and met that goal. You also probably noticed the Google ads as I started to monetize the blog. I made about $13 from Google so far. It’s not huge, but it’s a start. 🙂 Grade: A

All in all, I think I did quite well in Q1. What about you? How are you doing with your resolutions?

Looks like you did a pretty good job in Q1, RB40! I like to see that part of your resolution was with exercise. I’m starting my “On The Move” program at work, and have to start counting my steps. It’s going to be tough to reach my goal, but I’m excited, because I have not been as active as I want to be.

Also, great job keeping up with the site! It’s got to be tough with a newborn. I always look forward to reading your posts.

Thanks! It’s going to be tough keeping up with my exercise program now that I’m out of the usual routine. We’ll see how it goes.

You seem to be doing okay! Bank owned deals seem to take forever! Are values going up? If not, be careful if they come back in 3 months and say yes. Before there were gyms, there was walking, running, bicycling, and exercising. No excuses.

Value are still going down. We’ll see what happens next. We can still walk out of the deal if things do not look good. You’re right. I’ll have to exercise at home since it’s still too cold/wet to take baby out much.

Great first quarter. Cool how you fixed your own microwave! Amazing how you kept the site up when Baby RB40 came. I can barely keep up with my regular schedule!

Thanks! It was really tough to keep up with posting schedule, but with a little help from Yakezie friends, I was able to do it. 🙂

You’re doing so great RB40! There are quite a number of fellow bloggers who have just had newborns.

That is cool you fixed your own microwave too- I’m going to keep that in mind if *knock on wood* my future tenant’s microwave breaks down.

Heh heh, I noticed quite a few more babies around too. The economy must be getting better. 🙂
Thanks goodness I was able to fix the microwave. It would have cost close to $400 to replace+installation.

I’ve never heard of Spring resolutions, but that’s a great idea!

Sounds like you are going to have a profitable or at least very productive semi-sabbatical!

Good luck playing the XBox, sounds like you already have a full plate booked already 😉

It’s been crazy this week, but I am hoping things will calm down next week.

Good work on the goals, RB40. Monetizing the blog is something I need to work on. Maybe when I crack the 100,000 mark on Alexa.

It’s been a slow process and I’m not making much money yet, but you gotta start somewhere. 🙂
