Overheard In The Break Room, an xtranormal animation

I was going to write about our rental condo to follow up on my Investment Fundamental #8 – Real Estate, but I heard about this on NPR and I had to try it out. The rental condo post can wait until next week.

Warning: There is a tiny bit of PG-13 in here so no little kids please.

This is totally based on a true story! I overheard this conversation in the break room and I thought – “Yeap, that’s why we are fat and have no money. Fool!”

I have seen a couple of these animation before and didn’t really think too much about them, but then I heard a story on NPR while I was waiting for the train on Wednesday morning. I said to myself, “Wow, that’s cool!” So I called my office phone and left a short cryptic voice mail saying “extra normal.”Β  If I didn’t do this, I would forget.Β  Then I made a draft of this animation while on lunch break. πŸ˜‰

Here is the link to the story on NPR, but don’t click on this until you’re finished with my site, though. πŸ™‚

Behind Rise Of Xtranormal, A Hilarious DIY Deadpan

If you want to make an animation, google xtranormal and sign up for an account. You will get 300xp free. This robot show cost 249xp so I didn’t have to pay anything. There are other options though and if you want corporate drones in an office setting, it will cost 400xp. You’ll need to buy extra xp to make those movies. It took me about 30 minutes to draft the script and then probably about 2 hours to tweak it to my liking. It was a lot of fun and if I do more, I’m sure it will take a lot less time.

What do you think of my first movie? Do I have a future in directing? I hope you had a little laugh at least.

    Two words: Just Awesome!

  • Everyday Tips January 7, 2011, 5:59 am

This is fantastic! I am putting this in my roundup tomorrow for sure.

There must be other options for creating people for this and such because I saw a great one of these that was a conversation between a socccer mom and the coach. I think they used the same voice as the guy telling the lazy coworker where to get free drinks.

Back to the point though, it is amazing how lazy we are becoming. Maybe walking would make Mr. Sleepy wake up a little bit? His body might get all confused if it has to start burning calories though.

There are options to use people and other characters, but people cost money and I can’t spend too much money on blog investment at this time. It’s only 10 bucks, but still…

ps, just a piece of advice… You might want to add a few more social media buttons to your post, like Digg, Stumble Upon, etc. It will make it easier for when I promote you!

    • retirebyforty January 7, 2011, 7:34 am

OK, done! Thanks for the advice. Digg and SU didn’t do much for me previously, but maybe it’ll work better for a funny post. πŸ˜€

  • Kevin @ Thousandaire.com January 7, 2011, 6:29 am

These are fun. I made one with Sarah Palin, but never posted it because I didn’t want my blog to get too political. It is a lot of fun to make them though.

And I can imagine so many people in my office saying the same thing (even though we don’t have free soda in the cafe)

    • retirebyforty January 7, 2011, 7:35 am

I want to see the Sarah Palin video. Why don’t you put it on Youtube and send out a link, sounds like fun.

  • FB @ FabulouslyBroke.com January 7, 2011, 6:51 am

That is both funny and sad at the same time.

*sigh* πŸ™‚ A good walk wakes me up. Or a nap under my desk, a la George Costanza of Seinfeld πŸ˜‰

    • retirebyforty January 7, 2011, 7:38 am

Haha, I almost cracked up while I was waiting for my lunch in the microwave. πŸ˜€

  • Eric January 7, 2011, 8:56 am

That is awesome, funny, and sad but true. Great debut. I look forward to the next one.

  • Khaleef @ KNS Financial January 7, 2011, 10:02 am

I love it! That’s why we are fat and broke!!!

    • retirebyforty January 7, 2011, 5:07 pm

Doh!! I should have consulted Khaleef before I published. Broke is exactly the word I was looking for!

  • Nik January 7, 2011, 10:11 am

Very funny.. there’s a great one about an anesthesiologist vs an orthopedic doctor but maybe only funny if you’re a medical person πŸ™‚

    • retirebyforty January 7, 2011, 5:10 pm

hmmm… I looked at it and did not get it. I guess you gotta go to medical school for that one.

  • Jessica07 January 7, 2011, 11:10 am

Bahaha! I loved this! I’m going to go play around with my own scripts. I think this is exactly what all of my blog posts should begin with.

You did an excellent job. This better be as easy as you made it sound, Mister! πŸ˜‰

    • retirebyforty January 7, 2011, 5:11 pm

Have fun! Yes! I got another blogger to waste time on the internet in a new way. πŸ™‚

    • retirebyforty January 7, 2011, 5:13 pm

Have fun! All right, a 2nd victim that will waste time on the internet tonight!

  • Buck January 7, 2011, 2:59 pm

Cool stuff! Talk about raising the bar for everyone… Comedic entertainment combined with sad commentary. Keep up the good work and look forward to more! πŸ™‚

  • retirebyforty January 7, 2011, 5:06 pm

No, pepsi is $1.50. I rounded up, it’s was easier for the robot.
“based on a true story” isn’t the same as true story. πŸ˜€

  • Suba @ Wealth Informatics January 7, 2011, 7:53 pm

Simply awesome!!! Great job! Now I should learn how to do this, just for fun.

  • Kay Lynn @ Bucksome Boomer January 8, 2011, 10:42 am

I think it’s great for showing how absurd people can be. Let’s hope they don’t get overused though.

  • Barb Friedberg January 8, 2011, 12:59 pm

Hi-I appreciate both the content and the absolutely clever movie. Not too much time either. You did a really great job. Hope to see more. Also, I’m excited that I’m a top commenter-very cool.

    • retirebyforty January 9, 2011, 7:10 am

Now that I’ve seen it many time, I think I would do a much better job next time. It needs a few more pauses to let the information sinks in. I love quick entertainment and 1 minute is just about right for me. When I see 8 minutes clip, it just turn me off and I never finish them.
Thanks for being a top commenter!

  • Jonathan January 8, 2011, 3:35 pm

That’s pretty awesome! A great first movie, and I agree with your end statement. People can be so frustrating.

  • Invest It Wisely January 8, 2011, 4:04 pm

Nice! Haha, reminds me of some overheard conversations.

  • retirebyforty January 9, 2011, 7:10 am

  • Forest January 11, 2011, 4:36 am

Ha ha, this story sums up a lot of societies problems!!!! Xtranormal cracks me up!

  • SavingMento January 15, 2011, 8:45 am

I almost spit out what I was eating while I was watching this it was so funny!

Reminds me of the people at my office that get out of their cube, jump in a car, and drive to the nearest Tims to buy coffee when we have several choices of gourmet free coffee in our lunch room!

At least they’re making more of an effort than the guy in your video!

    • retirebyforty January 15, 2011, 10:42 am

Haha! I should tell people to drink some Pepsi while watching this. πŸ˜€

  • Aloysa January 15, 2011, 2:00 pm

OMG! I am trying to catch up with what I left behind as I was absent for 10 days… and then I see this! πŸ™‚ This is sooooo great! I am already seeing your bright future as a director. Fantastic job!

  • Christa January 18, 2011, 1:02 pm

    Hilarious! I love it…but I wanted a Pepsi…

  • youngandthrifty August 3, 2011, 12:24 am

I love these ones! have you seen the one with the bears?

    Great creativity, RB40!
