happy new year

Happy New Year Everyone!

I hope everyone had a great time on New Year’s Eve. We are all still trying to recover from the flu and didn’t do much yesterday. Anyway, it’s going to be a short one today so everyone can get back to their day off. I just want to thank everyone for reading Retire by 40 and making 2013 such a successful year for us. The last couple of weeks had been quite eventful.

NPR appearance

I was on NPR’s Marketplace Money last weekend! Check out the 3 minute segment about my 2013 New Year resolutions if you haven’t heard it yet. Well, I’m not very good at articulating my thoughts, so it’s a bit flat. I’m much better in written form, but I’m still very happy to be on NPR.

100,000 pageviews/month

Some of you may know about my blog goal for 2013. It was to surpass 100,000 pageviews per month. Well, we did it! The NPR segment and an appearance on Yahoo! Finance gave us a nice little boost at the end of December and nudged us over. We went over 100,000 pageviews on New Year’s Eve, right on the dot! I was pretty sure we’d have a slow December due to Christmas and New Year, but sometimes you just get lucky. Here is our result from December, the best month at RB40 so far.

December 2013 pageviews Happy New Year!

Check out my 2014 New Year Resolutions if you haven’t seen it. I have a feeling that it will be a great year. ;)

Thanks again and have a great New Year!

Well done, sir! I wouldn’t say you’re not good at articulating your thoughts. Doing broadcast media takes lots and lots of practice. Most of the people you see doing it on TV or radio have been doing it for years and make it look easy.
Also, exposure in broadcast media tends to lead to more exposure, so get ready for more in 2014!

I’m just not excited about more media exposure. I’m more comfortable in the blogging world. :)

Congratulations Joe on your achievements for 2013. I was listening to NPR driving from Fernley (Amazon plant) to Pahrump, NV in the cold western desert, and I heard your interview. Wow! I was amazed. Good work.

Wishing you and your family a great New Year in 2014.

Thank you! My wife’s old boss heard it and he remembered me. It’s pretty amazing. Good luck in 2014!
Maybe we’ll see you when we go camping this summer at the coast.

Congrats on your appearance on NPR! A good way to wrap up 2013.

I saw your new year resolution post but didn’t comment on it since I was having a hard time coming up with goals that are other than finance related! But since your blog is PF related I guess I can just focus on those goals here. My 2014 resolution:

1) Increase emergency fund to $35K
2) Increase my 401K contribution to 15%
3) Maximize hubby’s 401K contribution by the end of the year (right one it’s 10%, to max it out to this year $17,500 limit, it will be somewhere between 15 to 16%)
4) Increase net worth to $750K
5) One international trip and one domestic trip (new city) this year – the international trip is taken care of since we are going to Australia in Feb, we will see if we will fulfill our last year plan to visit Boston this summer.

Of course we are still going to max out both of our Roth IRAs this year. I just don’t make it a goal anymore since we automated the contribution every month. We are not setting any specific goals for our rental since this is the first year and we want to be realistic – if we can break even that will be great.

Good luck in 2014!
Have fun in Australia. I think your goals are great. They are all achievable except the net worth. That one seems to be dependent on the stock market. That’s why I try not to set net worth resolutions.
Good luck with the rentals as well.

100 000 views in a month is such a huge number. I finally made it over 6 000 in December and I was so thrilled.

I just want to pay off my HELOC in 2014 and keep my views above 6 000 every single month.

Congrats on hitting the unexpected milestone and meeting your goal right before the limit! December was, strangely, a good month for me too, which probably proves that now people spend more time in front of their computers than they used to in the past years.

Have a great 2014!
