Hurrah! We just had the cheapest month ever in the baby expense category. You may have heard that it cost nearly $300,000 to raise a child and that’s not even including college costs! That might seem a little high, but it includes buying a bigger home, daycare, healthcare, and transportation costs. Anyway, we are in the sweet spot right now; unfortunately it will be short lived.
We started potty training in July and it went quite well. We went whole hog and transitioned straight from diapers to underwear. The first week was really tough and he had accidents all over our condo and around town. He adjusted quickly, though, and we haven’t had any accidents for a few weeks now. Well, sometimes when we’re out and about, he’d ask to go “make water on the tree”. I’m fine with that, but this seems to be a cause of consternation for Mrs. RB40. Hey, it’s either that or peeing in his pants. The water will end up on the ground anyway, might as well have dry pants, right?
Woohoo! So now we don’t have to buy diapers and wipes anymore. Those things cost nearly $40/month.
We didn’t spend much money on the little guy at all in August. There were a ton of free events around town and we had a lot of fun attending them. We also took advantage of the nice weather and went for many walks, bike rides, and trips to the surrounding playgrounds. We did pay for healthcare, but that’s deducted straight from Mrs. RB40’s paycheck so we didn’t really notice it.
We didn’t buy any special food for him either. He ate whatever we ate and we just cooked a little extra. Sometime he doesn’t like what we made and then we’d just fall back on good old PBJ for him.
So right now, we are in a sweet spot for baby spending. I love it, but it’s not going to last long. He’ll start preschool in September and we’ll have to shell out about $500/month (part time, 3 days/week.) I think it will be worth it, though. He will learn how to socialize with kids his own age and hopefully the teachers will help rein him in a bit.
I also need a little more time to work on my online projects. My mom was helping out for a while so I could take a couple of hours after lunch to write. She is visiting my brother now and will head back to Thailand soon. So these days, I’m writing after RB40 Jr. goes to bed and that’s the worst time for me. My energy level is low and it’s hard to concentrate. I really can’t wait for preschool to start so I’ll have a little more time to myself. I think Jr. will have a great time there, too.
It would have been nice if this cheap period lasted a bit longer, but we’re still doing fine financially so I can’t complain much.
Now what are we going to do with this huge box of unopened wipes? Any ideas?
