It’s almost Thanksgiving and you know what that means. It’s a great time to buy new electronics! I have been good all year and didn’t buy anything new (unless we really needed it, of course). I do have a Black Friday wish list though and it begins with a new laptop for our chief editor, Mrs. RB40.
Old laptops suck
Mrs. RB40’s laptop was purchased in 2007 and that is ancient for a laptop. It’s still working fine in general, but I hate using it. I usually work on my 2011 Lenovo laptop, but sometimes I use her laptop because it is close at hand. It’s such a huge bother to use it. It takes forever to boot up and load Windows VISTA(!). I can’t have too many windows open because it only has 2GB of memory. The disk drive is nearly full which slows everything down. I just deleted a bunch of files and that should help a little. I know I sound like I’m just complaining, but it’s just much slower than my laptop and I don’t like using it at all.
I upgraded her CPU and RAM in 2009 and it helped, but now it’s just very sluggish. Another thing I don’t like about it is the weight. At five and a half pounds, it’s just too heavy to lug around and it’s mostly sitting in the kitchen table now. The battery is also shot so the power cord is continuously plugged in.
Shiny new laptops are very tempting
The latest PC laptops are looking quite nice. The new Ultrabook laptops are particularly attractive and drool worthy. These new laptops are thin and weight around 4 pounds. The battery is supposed to last at least 5 hours. Best of all, the price is finally starting to come down. Last year, these thin and light laptops had cost over $1,000, but this year I can see some models around $500! That is much more within my price range and I’m sure the price will come down even further for the Black Friday/Cyber Monday sale.
Mrs. RB40 uses the laptop to edit our website, surf the web, stream TV shows, occasionally play online games, check e-mail and write. This is light usage and I think a budget laptop will suit her needs. I also want to borrow it when I go to work at the library. A lighter laptop would be awesome.
When I’m shopping for a laptop, the first place I check is Techbargains.com. This is a great site to see all the tech gadgets deals of the day. I used to check Techbargains every day just to see what’s on sale (many of my nerdy friends do the same when they’re at work.) I don’t do that anymore though because there are just too many cool things to buy. Now I only check when I need to buy something. I don’t have much spare time these days and shopping online can take up a huge amount of time. Early retirement and the lack of a regular paycheck really put a crimp on the whole gadget shopping experience.
Another reason I check TechBargains around Black Friday is for their awesome giveaways. The site just launched its largest contest yet, the Countdown to Black Friday Giveaway with 10 days of huge prizes. Today they are giving away Apple’s new iPad Mini worth $329! I took the kiddo to the mall to walk around last week and checked out the iPad Mini at the Apple Store. It was pretty awesome. I’m very tempted, but I’m too cheap so I’ll enter to win one instead. It’s easy to enter. Just sign up for their money saving newsletter, enter every day and then share with friends for extra entries. The contest runs through November 21st. Click here now to enter to win. Good luck!
