2012 Goals and Resolutions – Midyear Update

new year resolutions midyear update

Summer time at the beach in Oregon.

2012 is flying by. Are you keeping track of your new year resolutions or are they long forgotten? I must admit, I haven’t focused on them much over the last 3 months. Life is just so busy and time is passing by so quickly. These quarterly updates really make me more aware of my goals and help me refocus.

Let’s start off with Baby RB40’s goals for 2012. Actually he accomplished all his goals in the first 3 months already, so I’ll set new goals for him. 🙂

Baby RB40’s Goals for 2012

– Walk. He walks very well now, but he still falls down pretty often. He is always in a hurry and doesn’t look where he’s going much of the time. Let’s set a new goal to jumping. He wants to jump, but he just can’t get off the ground yet.

– Talk. He can say 5 words now – mama, papa, hi, bye bye, and arms through. I think 20 words is a realistic goal for 2012.

– Others. Hmmm… What other goals can we set? How about kicking a ball? He can throw pretty well, but doesn’t know how to kick yet. He is a great climber and has been all over the couch and coffee table over the last few months.

On to my 2012 goals

  1. Rental Income: average $700/month. We have been averaging $810/month so far in 2012. This is great, but there are a couple of big jobs ahead so I know this will come down a bit. We are going to repaint and do some drainage work on the 4-plex this summer.
  2. Online Income: average $300/month in Q4 2012. I reset this goal to $300/month because we’re moving to affiliate income and PPC ads and the income is a lot less than private ads, but it should be more stable. In Q2, these income averaged to $227. That’s not bad at all.
  3. Dividend & Interest: average $500/month in Q4 2012. Done! The dividend portfolio should generate about $550/month. In Q2, we average $379/month. Many of my mutual funds pay out in Q4, so we’ll probably have to wait until the end of the year to see $500/month.
  4. Monthly positive cash flow: $500/month. So far in 2012, we average about $1,000/month and are ahead of the goal, though I’m not done with June accounting yet.
  5. P2P income: $100/month by the December 2012. I’ll throw our extra money into prosper.com and see how far we can get by the end of the year. In June, we made $62 in interest. We’re getting closer to the $100/month goal every month.

Personal Goals

  1. Change job. WIP
  2. Stay healthy by eating well and keeping active. I’ve been on leave over the last couple months to be a stay at home dad and my exercise program is in terrible shape. We go out to the park and play, but I’m not getting my aerobic and weight lifting exercise anymore. Recently, I’ve begun to do boot camp exercise, but it’s hard when I have to watch baby RB40 like a hawk. He seems to cut in front of big people pretty often and we had some close calls. I’ll also try to do more yoga and exercise band work out while we’re at home. If you have any tips, please share them.
  3. Join Toastmasters. I think this will be a bust this year. I will probably have to wait until baby RB40 goes off to school before I can do this.
  4. Pursue other side ventures. I’m keeping an open mind, but no success yet.

Blog/Online Goals

  1. Retire By 40. I’m still able to consistently post 3 times per week. I’ve been working after baby RB40 goes to bed and it’s okay. Traffic has flattened out in June and I’m hoping it will pick up again in September. Overall, we are doing pretty well and are hitting about 40,000 pageviews per month.
  2. Develop a few more sites. I started another site, but couldn’t keep it going. I will probably have to hire a writer if I ever want to get another site going. Writing is not easy for me and it takes a lot of time.
  3. Attend one blogging conference. I purchased my ticket to the 2012 Financial Blogger Conference and booked the flight! I’m really looking forward to meeting many bloggers I only know through the internet.

It looks like I lost my focus over the last three months, but at least our financial goals are doing well. If you check the Spring Update, you would see that I haven’t made much progress on the other goals. I think I’ll have to focus on one thing at a time and get that done. We didn’t eat very healthy on our California road trip, but now that we’re home, we are revamping our diet. I’ll focus on eating well and make exercise a habit over the next month. Once that’s out of the way, then I can work on the other goals.

How are you doing with your New Year’s goals and resolutions? Did you lose those 10 lbs yet?

Keep working on your goals 🙂 I think everybody sets high goals, so that they can accomplish at least a couple. This post actually made me look at my goals for the first part of the year. Can’t believe the year is halfway through! I accomplished 4 of my goals: finish MS, get offer letter, lose some weight (still have more to go). I have not started learning a third language though.

    • retirebyforty June 29, 2012, 9:37 pm

Wow, you are doing great on your goals. Nice going.

  • Kurt @ Money Counselor June 29, 2012, 7:08 am

Joe, that strikes me as a nice set of passive income generators: Diverse, and generating significant cash flow. Good for you! I’m curious how much of your time managing the 4-plex takes…

    • retirebyforty June 29, 2012, 9:38 pm

Thanks! I actually hire a property manager for the 4 plex so it doesn’t take that much time. I already manage a rental home and it’s tough to do much with a baby around.

  • Daisy @ Add Vodka June 29, 2012, 7:12 am

I’ve always wanted to join toastmasters, too. I am planning on going in September, because I’ll be graduated, but it will be a crazy month so we’ll see. I’m sad I won’t be going to FINCON! Have fun!

    • retirebyforty June 29, 2012, 9:38 pm

Mrs. RB40 has been a toastmaster for almost 10 years now and I kept putting it off. I think 2014 is the year for me. 😉

  • krantcents June 29, 2012, 7:24 am

Good job on your goals! I don’t think you can take credit for Baby RB40 though. LOL! My progress was delayed, but not forgotten.

    • retirebyforty June 29, 2012, 9:39 pm

Baby RB40 is doing great. 🙂

  • Mr. Everyday Dollar June 29, 2012, 8:14 am

I can vouch for how good Toastmasters is! I joined back in January and the positive effects have helped me in both my personal and professional life.

    • retirebyforty June 29, 2012, 9:40 pm

I just don’t have any time right now, but I will join at some point. Mrs. RB40 has been an active member for a long time now so I hear stories and attend some contests.

  • Jeff @ Sustainable Life Blog June 29, 2012, 8:35 am

Looks like you are doing well so far joe! I suggest you talk to baby RB40 and see why he as been so successful at meeting his goals, while you are still working on yours. Perhaps he could provide you with a few pointers.

    • retirebyforty June 29, 2012, 9:40 pm

Yeah, I think baby RB40 can give me some pointers. It seems his method is crying until he gets his way, but I guess that can work…

  • DaveL June 29, 2012, 9:22 am

Great Job on sticking with the goals and especially baby RB40 🙂

Over the last 4 years I have really gotten into fitness and now it is something I cant go without. I would definitely recommend checking out WeightTraining.com. Its a great website that has many free workouts and step-by-step instructions for each exercise. Its designed for you to log your workouts and you get points for workout you log. Ive found that this is a great way to help keep me motivated and staying consistant.

If you’d like to talk more about it, feel free to email me. Keep up the great work on those 2012 goals!

    • retirebyforty June 29, 2012, 9:42 pm

That’s great! I’ll check it out. I have been working out since college, but it’s really tough with a baby around.
I’ll probably have to stick with cardio and maybe a few push ups until he’s a bit older.

  • I got a new job this year which was my number one goal. Congrats on the progress and keep trucking along.

    • retirebyforty June 29, 2012, 9:42 pm

      Congratulation on the new job!

  • Michelle June 29, 2012, 9:56 am

Looks like you’re doing great. I’m jealous of how well you’re doing with your financial goals! And I wish I could go to FinCon.

    • retirebyforty June 29, 2012, 9:43 pm

FinCon is more expensive than I first thought, but at least most of it is paid for now. Hopefully it will be worth the investment.

  • Michelle June 29, 2012, 1:02 pm

I’m going to Fincon!!! I look forward to meeting you and cooing over each other’s adorable baby pictures 🙂

I actually didn’t set any goals for New Year’s, but I have set goals unrelated. I hit my weight goal (get under my “ideal body weight” which I am….but I want to get to my pre-pregnancy weight which is still 7 lbs less. Maybe I was too skinny before though??) I’m eating healthy, exercising daily, and drinking a ton of water. I do slip up occasionally and eat an entire sleeve of cookies sometimes, but I’m pretty sure I’d bust if I were perfect ALL THE TIME! 🙂 Great job on the blog goals….I think you’re doing awesome. Your baby’s goals are so cute. My daughter is going to be 1 on July 1st and is running! I actually would like her to scale back on her personal goals. Seriously…can’t she go back to being the little baby I JUST HAD?! Why is she running and talking so much already? Crazy baby…:) Have a great weekend, RB40 crew!

    • retirebyforty June 29, 2012, 9:45 pm

Great! See you in Denver. Mrs. RB40 can’t get back to pre-pregnancy weight either, but she is not very good with exercises.
Girls develop so much faster than boys. Our guy isn’t talking much at all, just baby babbles. Have a great weekend!

  • Dave June 29, 2012, 3:42 pm

I have to admire your persistence and the sheer number of goals your pursuing. You are well diversified in goals. With all those goals I hope your keeping room for the fun stuff in life. I hope they are giving you all you want from life.

    • retirebyforty June 29, 2012, 9:46 pm

Thanks! I might have to cut back a bit next year to make it more manageable….
I’m keeping busy with baby and we do have a lot of fun. That’s one reason why I didn’t make much progress since Spring.

  • Invest It Wisely June 30, 2012, 11:25 am

Great update, Joe, and I also admire your persistence.

I’ve also found it very time consuming to keep additional sites going. My only commitment is to keep the posts coming at IIW, but for example at my technical site, it can take me a whole day to research and write a post so can’t be doing that all the time.

It’s ok. 80/20 rule: maximize the effectiveness of your time, not the workload on your plate. 🙂

    • retirebyforty July 1, 2012, 8:51 am

I like the 80/20 rule too, but it’s hard to be effective when there is a baby around. 🙂
      Hope things are going well.

  • 20's Finances June 30, 2012, 2:03 pm

Joe, I can’t wait to meet you. It’s so close. Great work on the goals. I love your income diversification. How long have you been investing in dividend paying investments?

    • retirebyforty July 1, 2012, 8:52 am

It will be great to meet you too. I have been investing in dividend investments for about 3 years. I had most of my investment in growth before that and have been slowly converting over.

  • Barbara Friedberg June 30, 2012, 6:15 pm

Everyone is talking about mid year goals. Yikes, where is that post I wrote 6 months ago? I need to do a check in. Sounds like you’re doing great. Enjoy the baby.

    • retirebyforty July 1, 2012, 8:52 am

Time flies! That’s one reason why I want to be a stay at home dad for a while. 🙂

  • Wayne @ Young Family Finance June 30, 2012, 7:54 pm

Wow, New Year’s Resolutions…thanks for the reminder! I haven’t thought of them since February! I’m glad that little RB40 is progressing so well with his- may I ask what “arms through” refers to? Putting on a coat or something? Kids are so interesting in what they pick up first sometimes!

    • retirebyforty July 1, 2012, 8:53 am

He said arms through when he was putting on a shirt. He’s just repeating what we said, but it’s still amazing. 🙂

  • TM @ Young and Thrifty July 1, 2012, 10:05 pm

If you are constantly hitting your goals 100% of the time you aren’t aiming high enough right? Keep working hard RB40, I always enjoy following your progress and your quest to diversify your income stream. I always try to think about how much my life would be different if I had a toddler… so far we haven’t got the itch!

    • retirebyforty July 1, 2012, 10:51 pm

You’re right. We need some challenges, but baby RB40 does make it pretty difficult. 🙂

  • Aloysa @My Broken Coin July 2, 2012, 7:57 pm

Toastmasters? I attended one meeting and that was it. It is a good organization but I learned my public speaking skills back in college. In my public speaking class. 🙂
Seems like you are pretty much on track. Throw in some deadlifts in the mix, you will be in a great shape. 🙂

    • retirebyforty July 2, 2012, 9:51 pm

Nice! I should have taken a class in college too. My knees can’t handle deadlifts anymore. 🙁
