2011 new year resolution summer update

The Clidesdales always get great reception

2011 New Year’s Resolutions

Can you believe 2011 is already half over? It’s summer time and we are looking forward to the parades and festivals! My 3 months early retirement preview also came to an end and I will be back to work on Monday. 🙁 I had a great time with baby RB40. It was exhausting most of the time, but I really cherished the experience. I think all dads should take 3 months off to bond with your baby if at all possible. It’ll give you much more appreciation for moms everywhere. Anyway, it’s time to check on the 2011 New Year’s resolutions.

Here are the 2011 resolutions and update:

Financial Goal – acquire a rental 4-plex. We made an offer on a short sale, but we are still working through the process. This topic needs its own post, I have way too many things to say to fit in one paragraph. All in all, it’s been disappointing because we haven’t been able to close the deal. Grade: C

Transfer to a new position – I’m going back to work on Monday and I’ll start looking around. Work will be pretty busy the rest of this year, so we’ll see how it goes. Grade: Incomplete

Stay Alive in 2011 – Well, you know I’m still alive because the blog is still getting updated! During my 3 months off, I didn’t exercise much at all. We had an overlap during the first few weeks of my time off and I was able to do a bit of yoga. When Mrs. RB40 went back to work, I was overwhelmed by the little guy and gave up on working out completely. We went out for walks in the evening when the weather was nice, but that was about it. I’m looking forward to the old routine of going to the gym at lunch. It’ll be nice to get back into the swing of things. When I quit my job, I’ll have to work on setting up a routine so I can be more healthy. It was tough this time because baby RB40 was so small and we didn’t want to take him out when it was rainy and cold. I think by the time I quit my job, he’ll be big enough to go out in inclement weather. Grade: C-

No New Electronics –  I am thinking about shutting this one down. It’s too tough to live without new electronics in this day and age! I am hankering for a new laptop, but hopefully we can hold off until next year.

  • new slim tower fan – We got a new tower fan. It’s so nice and compact. I’ll sell the our old oscillating fan for $5 soon.
  • replacement CPU cooler – to fix Zoey’s mischievous handiwork on my computer.

Both of these were replacements, but we could have kept the old fan. I think this grade will fall to a D by the end of the year. Grade: B+

Blog Goals – My blog goal were…

  • post 3 times per week – Successful so far. There were times when I had blogger blocks, but somehow or another I was able to keep posting 3 times a week. Yay!
  • Participate in Carnival once a month – I participated in carnivals a few times a month and even hosted two carnivals. FYI, hosting really gave me an Alexa Rank boost. It was worth the work.
  • Monetize Retire By 40 – I made about $65 on Google Adsense so far. In a couple of months I’ll get my first check from Google! I also had a few sponsor posts and other sale so we are off to a good start!
  • Grade: A

All in all, I didn’t do as well in Q2 as in Q1, but we still have the rest of the year to pick up the pieces! What about you? How are you doing with your 2011 resolutions?

Ahhh, bummer you’ve got to go back to work! Did the 3 months just FLY by? I’m looking to do a sabbatical sometime myself.

    Cheers, Sam

The 3 months absolutely flew by in a blink! I can’t believe it’s gone. 🙁

  • cashflowmantra June 27, 2011, 2:39 am

I really didn’t make any major resolutions this year so I am not having to grade myself. Good luck getting back into a routine.

  • Laura June 27, 2011, 3:00 am

Too bad you’re going back to work but how great that you got to spend the three months with your new son.

  • LifeAndMyFinances June 27, 2011, 3:59 am

Those were some tough goals you set for yourself! Good luck with the 4-plex. I would love to hear about your experiences!

  • No Debt MBA June 27, 2011, 6:54 am

I’m making great progress on my goal of paying for my MBA in cash. I, knock on wood, should have the first year in the bag and the second is looking better.

I’ve also found that I miss the structure and routine of full time work when I have a long period off. Structure really does help me accomplish more.

    • retirebyforty June 27, 2011, 10:32 am

That’s a great goal! Structure helps me as well. It was a big adjustment to go to no structure at all. It was great for 3 months, but I wasn’t very productive.

Going back to work must be tough!

Congrats on achieving some goals – especially the posting 3 times per week. That was one of my goals too, but I definitely didn’t achieve that!

Kids are wonderful, but when they are little, it does seem to sidetrack the amount of time you can spend on your matters, and therefore, your goals. Still, you have the right attitude. He’ll only be a baby once, and you can make up for lost time on these goals later.

    • retirebyforty June 27, 2011, 10:34 am

The little guy is getting better every day. Over the last few weeks, he has been able to take longer naps during the day, 1-2 hours. I was able to get a few things done in that window. Previously he naps for only 30 minutes and he would be up and at em again…

  • Krantcents June 27, 2011, 5:21 pm

As an old(er) person, I can tell you life goes extremely fast. Make every day count! Good job on the goals!

    • retirebyforty June 28, 2011, 10:10 am

I am starting to realize that. If I have anything that I want to do, I’d better do it now. Or make plan to do it.

  • Buck Inspire June 27, 2011, 6:22 pm

Way to hit your goals. Wow, three months went by pretty quick. Sounds like you enjoyed yourself. I should recheck my goals, too. Don’t know how you maintained the post schedule when the baby was born. You are one dedicated blogger!

    • retirebyforty June 28, 2011, 10:09 am

It was pretty crazy, but I had some help from the Yakezie network. I had to keep with the routine because who knows what would happen if I stop for even one week….

  • Lindy Mint June 27, 2011, 6:39 pm

Well hey, at least you’re getting an ‘A’ in one subject.
Transitioning from working to staying at home is a huge adjustment. If I were in the same position, I’m sure all bets would be off for me to succeed at anything.

  • 101 Centavos June 28, 2011, 4:12 am

    So so on resolutions…. maybe a B-.
The little guy will be a teenager in no time at all.

    • retirebyforty June 28, 2011, 9:48 am

I believe you. The 3 months just flew by. I can’t believe it’s gone and he is so much bigger now. 🙂

  • Miss T @ Prairie Eco-Thrifter June 28, 2011, 10:05 am

Sorry to hear you have to return to the grind soon. At least you might get some mental stimulation. As far as my resolutions go, I would say I am about a B.
