summer fun

summer fun during Bastille Day.

It’s time for another update to our 2011 New Year’s resolutions. It had been a busy summer and we didn’t take a big trip or anything this year. It’s tough to go anywhere with a little baby since he needs so much attention and gear. We mostly stayed in town and enjoyed the long summer days. The weather has turned and it’s getting cold and rainy already. There are only 3 months left in 2011 and I need to step up some work to cross off the resolution list.

Financial Goal – Our only financial goal this year was to acquire another rental property. It took 7 months, but we finally did it. We acquired a 4plex in September. It was a short sale and had some deferred maintenance so we asked for a further price reduction of $25,000. That reduced our down payment enough to pay for roof maintenance, crawl space repair, and to have a bit of reserve. We won’t have positive cash flow for a few months, but I think 2012 will be more normal. You can read more about our 4plex investment here. Grade: A

The rest of the resolutions

Transfer to a new position – I don’t know if I’ll be able to complete this goal. The economy has gotten worse and external hiring is frozen again. An internal transfer is still an option, but that is also much more difficult than earlier this year. Grade: Incomplete

Stay Alive in 2011 – This goal is about what I can do to be as healthy as possible. Since I went back to work from my 3 month sabbatical, I’ve been going to the gym 4-5 times a week. My energy level is much lower than before we had baby RB40 though and I am always exhausted. I can only do 30 minutes on the elliptical machine and then a few dumbbell exercises. I joined the yoga class twice a week and that really helped me relax and improved my flexibility. My eating habits are not too bad. I usually bring lunch and that’s probably the best thing I can do to keep my diet balanced. Grade: B+

No New Electronics (unless it is a replacement) – I stopped keeping track, but I don’t think we purchased too many new electronics. We got new electric Oral-B toothbrushes and I loved mine! My teeth feel much cleaner than when I used my old toothbrush. I think that was the only electronic gadget we got in the past 3 months and it is a replacement. I want a new laptop though so the good grade won’t last. Oh yeah, a few electronic toys for baby RB40 made their way into our household. His saucer has a farm animal noise maker and his mat has a melody thing the needed batteries. Oh well…   Grade: B-

Blog Goals – My blog goals were…

  • Post 3 times per week – It was a lot of work, but I was able to post 3-4 times per week. Some weeks are more difficult than others, but we just have to push on.
  • Participate in blog Carnival once a month – This dropped by the way side. I have way too many things to do. I probably should hire someone to help with this.
  • Monetize Retire By 40 – Things are going well on this front. We got our first check from Google and in September, we made $94 from Google. It would be great to cross the $100 threshold every month and receive a regular check from Google.
  • Blog Grade: A- due to dropping the ball on the carnivals.

All in all, things are going quite well except the transfer to a new job goal. I have serious doubts that I will be able to complete that goal. What about you? How are you doing with your 2011 resolutions? There are only 3 months left so we need to keep up the good work and make a big push to finish the incomplete goals.

Overall, not too bad. A’s and B’s.

But if my kids brought home a report card like this, I’d be all over them like hair on a monkey 🙂

    • retirebyforty October 3, 2011, 9:11 am

      Thanks!

  • Moneycone October 3, 2011, 4:39 am

One of the select few who revisit new year resolutions! I’m glad you are on track!

And hey, Congrats on the Plutus awards!

    • retirebyforty October 3, 2011, 9:12 am

Thanks! I guess you are right. Most resolutions are thrown out the window by this time of the year. 🙂

  • Dining Out Challenge October 3, 2011, 4:47 am

Congratulations on the Plutus Award! I think you are doing great. It is hard to stay focused when you have a little one and always feel tired, but you are still able to meet all your goals. Great progress.

    • retirebyforty October 3, 2011, 9:12 am

Thanks! A couple of goals are not really being met, but the big ones are doing well.

  • 20'sFinances October 3, 2011, 5:40 am

Unfortunately, one of my goals is not doing so well. I had a goal to bike 1000 miles this year. I have definitely reached the half way mark, but not much beyond that. Now that it has gotten cooler, I am not commuting to work by bike and the exercise bike is not as appealing. I need to get on it, but there are lots of other things that have kept me busy. Thanks for the reminder/encouragement to get back on track.

    • retirebyforty October 3, 2011, 9:13 am

Only 3 months left so get on that bike! 🙂

  • Little House October 3, 2011, 6:44 am

I like how you graded yourself on your goal. 😉 It’s time for me to revisit my goals and see where I stand. Thanks for the reminder!

I like your “Stay alive in 2011” goal. I decided to get back into running this month, although I already blew it today, since some important things are going on today and I decided getting as much sleep as possible would be a good idea. Tomorrow!

Also, I agree that my teeth feel 10x cleaner after brushing with an electric tooth brush.

    • retirebyforty October 3, 2011, 9:14 am

Life is just too busy these days for everyone. I need another sabbatical. 🙂 Good luck on running.

  • Buck Inspire October 3, 2011, 4:29 pm

Congrats on the Plutus and nice grades, A’s and B’s! Way to exercise even with the baby and the blog. Thanks for the reminder, I need to review my resolutions. Can’t believe only 3 months to go. Charge!!!

    • retirebyforty October 4, 2011, 10:27 am

This year is flying by even faster than usual with baby RB40 to push us along. Good luck with your resolutions.

  • krantcents October 3, 2011, 4:58 pm

Good job! We’re getting down to the wire, time to sprint. 🙂

  • Everyday Tips October 3, 2011, 7:45 pm

You know what my goals were like after I had a baby?
    1. Get up and shower at some point during the day
    2. Find time to take a nap.

So, I think you are doing great!!!

I love my Sonic Care. I took a regular toothbrush to FINCON this weekend and my teeth just weren’t the same…

    • retirebyforty October 4, 2011, 10:29 am

I know how that feel. It’s getting much better now that he is a bit older, but some nights are more difficult than others.

  • Hunter @ Financially Consumed October 3, 2011, 9:11 pm

I think it’s great that you grade your performance as you go. I’ve achieved my personal goals with the exception of health & fitness. Still need to lose 26 lbs by December 31. It’s going to be close.

I was there when they announced your award. Well done! You have built a strong community here that resonates with a broad audience.

    • retirebyforty October 4, 2011, 10:30 am

26lbs? That’s a lot of weight. You’ll have to work hard to finish that goal.
It’s too bad I couldn’t make it this year. I hope everyone had a great time.

  • Miss T @ Prairie Eco-Thrifter October 4, 2011, 7:49 am

I think you are doing great especially with your fitness and health goes. Don’t get too down on yourself. Being active in any form is good for you.

I, like the others, like your grading system. I need to revisit my goals and I should use this method.

Congrats too on your award. I am very happy for you.

  • Financial Success for Young Adults October 4, 2011, 10:37 am

My main goal for myself was to get a job so I can give myself an A on that! lol
I had a lot of general goals this year, so I plan to write down some more concrete goals for the new year. (Is it 2012 already? Gosh, time flies!)

    • retirebyforty October 5, 2011, 1:05 pm

Congratulation on accomplishing your main goal! 🙂
      The rest is gravy right?

  • Jeff @ Sustainable life blog October 4, 2011, 11:42 am

Looks like you’re doing some great things this year – way to go with your goals!

  • Christa October 4, 2011, 12:22 pm

Great job on everything! Congrats on the Plutus as well — well deserved!

  • Aaron Hung October 4, 2011, 4:28 pm

good job on the real estate purchase, I’d love to get into something like that one day 😀

  • Roshawn @ Watson Inc October 4, 2011, 4:47 pm

It looks like you are doing just fine. I’m so happy you are making such progress. I suspect keeping yourself accountable is part of the secret to your success. Cheers!

    • retirebyforty October 5, 2011, 1:06 pm

Thank you! Being accountable and keeping track of the goals definitely help.

  • Darwin's Money October 4, 2011, 7:19 pm

Congrats on all those accomplishments – posting 3-4 days a week is key! You’re seeing the fruits of your labor!

  • Forest October 7, 2011, 5:22 am

It’s brave to put your goals out like you do and even braver to revisit them publicly…. I know you are not 100% on everything but you are not doing at all bad.
